How do you know your tax return was actually filed?

Getting a copy of your tax return and having it filed are not the same thing. You can confirm it yourself in a few minutes by registering for an account at IRS.gov.

September 23, 2026

The short answer

A copy of your tax return isn’t proof that it was filed. A tax return sent electronically isn’t filed until the IRS accepts it, and you can check that for yourself in a few minutes through your IRS online account.

A copy isn’t proof

You paid your accountant, and you have a finished copy of your tax return. It’s natural to assume that means the IRS has it. It doesn’t, necessarily. Preparing a tax return and filing a tax return are two separate steps.

A tax return sent electronically isn’t filed until the IRS accepts it. If it was never sent, or it was sent and not accepted, nothing on your end looks any different.

Why it matters

If a tax return never got filed, you go about your year as usual. The first sign of trouble may be a letter from the IRS months later.

How to check it yourself

It takes a few minutes:

  1. Go to IRS.gov.
  2. Search for “account for individuals.”
  3. Register, or sign in if you already have an account.

Once you’re in, you can see whether the IRS received your tax return. Your online account also shows your tax records and any digital notices the IRS has sent you.

That one step can save you a real headache later and give you peace of mind.
