Not much. A Trump account gives you no deduction going in, and the growth is taxed when it comes out. The real perk is a one-time $1,000 government deposit for children born from 2025 through 2028, which you have to request.
What a Trump account is
Millions of children now have a Trump account, and many parents are not sure what it does. It is an investment account for your child, and the money is generally restricted until the child turns 18. The question most parents ask is simple: does it save the family any tax?
How it compares with an IRA
The easiest way to see the tax picture is to line it up against the two accounts most people already know:
- Traditional IRA: can give you a deduction when you put money in.
- Roth IRA: lets the growth come out tax-free when the rules are met.
- Trump account: does neither. There is no deduction for what the family puts in, and the growth is taxed when it comes out.
So as a tax tool, the savings are small. The account lets money grow until it is withdrawn, but it does not offer the up-front deduction or the tax-free growth that make IRAs attractive.
The real perk is the $1,000 deposit
The bigger benefit is free money. If your child was born from 2025 through 2028, the government adds a one-time $1,000 deposit to the account. It is not automatic, even if an account was already opened for your child. A parent or guardian has to open or activate the account at trumpaccounts.gov and request the deposit (the IRS form for the election is Form 4547).
If you have a child in that age window, it is worth checking whether that request has been made. Families weighing whether to add their own money to the account can compare it with other ways to save for a child before deciding.
